Dramatherapy with Children and Adolescents

Although there is not a right age for Dramatherapy, I will suggest it is especially beneficial for children and adolescents, as they will usually naturally engage in the process of drama or play. Their means of expression is less verbal and often more playful and creative.

Playing is central to Dramatherapy and it helps to bring changes in the life of children or adolescents. During sessions, they will have the opportunity to learn how to make sense of their own world through the use of enactment, movement, role-play, stories or creating images with a wide range of materials. All feelings are welcome and can be explored or expressed through the use of different techniques.

  • Dramatherapy can be applied in a variety of settings, such as: schools, care homes, children’s hospitals or youth organizations and can cover a wide range of diagnostics, conditions or treatments. Cases from emotional, behavioural, social or mental health background can be considered. Some of them can derive from domestic violence, emotional disturbance, mental illness, sexual or aggressive acting, abandonment or bereavement, obsessive compulsive disorder, attention deficit disorder, self harm, trauma or abuse. As well as learning to manage anger, selective mutism, violent behaviour or help school children to express feelings, build confidence, stimulate self esteem or support them around transitional moments.

  • I always supply the materials needed for each session, which I carefully select accordingly to the clients needs, the age group and the aims of the sessions. Materials can range from

    • toys,

    • masks,

    • figures,

    • puppets,

    • costumes,

    • art materials like paint,

    • papers,

    • fabric,

    • strings.

Sessions can take the form of either one-to-one or group depending on the individual or particular organizations requirements. Interventions can be short-term, medium-term or long-term.
